Chapter Twenty

The most anticipated day of the year at JesseField dawned bright and clear.

Eden was dressed smartly, but not flamboyantly. She dressed as she would any other day but only a discerning eye would notice the different color of lipstick, the new blouse, the extra confidence in her steps and the constant smile on her face.

When the board meeting started, Eden came up with several excuses to walk past the room, surreptitiously peering at the transparent glasses to glean what went on in the room. The room was sound proof, so she couldn’t hear a word but each time she passed, she always caught Melanie’s smiling gaze. The meeting usually entailed end of the year’s report, followed by casting of vote for the next managing partner.

Eden felt both excited and nervous. The expectation of the outcome of the meeting made her forget about her woes; she even felt positive about the pregnancy today.

Once she made partner, she would settle to life as a single mom and raise her kid as best as she could. They would go visiting her parents on the farm. She would take her son or daughter traveling round the world and ensure that he or she had the best education there was. Eden would like her baby to be an elite; somebody well educated and successful like his father.

One hour after the meeting started, Eden was beginning to worry. Previously, the meeting took forty minutes at most, but today, things seemed to have turned hectic. The last time she went through the outer office, Melanie seemed to be in an agitated state and so were some of the other partners.

Eden had scampered out of sight, so they wouldn’t see her watching them in that state.

Another fifteen minutes passed and Eden decided to take another leisurely walk past the board room.

The sight of Melanie marching out of the boardroom was the first to greet her. The woman seemed furious at something. Her eyes were flashing and she left the others still seated. When she saw Eden, she changed tracks and headed straight for her. “Never trust men; they would do anything for a pussy,” she hissed between bared teeth.

Her words sent a feeling of panic jarring through Eden’s heart. Her eyes searched Melanie’s face, trying to discern what the woman meant, but she couldn’t be sure.

Melanie shook her head and turned away.

Eden found her voice at last. “The vote for the partnership?” she asked quietly.

Melanie did not turn, but spat out just one word, “Jasmine”.

Eden felt faint. She wouldn’t—couldn’t believe she’d been passed over for the partnership. It’d always been a toss-up between both of them, but Eden had been so sure that after the Stone case, every other case the sleazy girl had done would fade into irrelevance.

Obviously, there were more rewards for six years of sleeping with the bosses than there were for five years of hard work.

“Nice shirt, Eden,” Jasmine drawled mockingly from next to her. “Is it new?”

Eden saw red at the girl’s deliberate jab.
